ASTM D130 Copper Strip Corrosion Test Explained

The copper strip corrosion test evaluates the corrosive tendency of certain petroleum products toward copper under controlled test conditions. It is especially useful as a quality-control indicator for sulfur-containing or reactive components.

What the result tells you

After exposure, the copper strip is compared with standardized corrosion classifications. A darker or tarnished strip does not automatically mean the same chemical cause in every sample; interpretation must follow the applicable method and product specification.
